Tera-WURFL for Device Capabilities

terawurfl.gifIf you develop for the mobile web then you should take a look at Tera-WURFL.

For those who don’t know, Wireless Universal Resource File (WURFL) is a database of phone capabilities. It can be used to do things like redirecting mobile visitors to the mobile version of your site, detecting the type of streaming video that a visiting mobile device supports, detecting iPhone, iPod and iPad visitors and delivering them an iPhone-friendly version of your site, detecting ringtone download support and supported ringtone formats, detecting the screen resolution of the device and resizing images and wallpapers/backgrounds to an appropriate size for the device and detecting support for Javascript, Java/J2ME and Flash Lite.

Tera-WURFL is a PHP & MySQL based library that uses the WURFL to detect the capabilities of mobile devices. There’s a web browser based interface that allows you to view the capabilities of the device you are browsing from or browse to capabilities of devices in the database. There’s also an iPhone version that also works from any WebKit browser or via desktop browsers.
