While the current relative numbers are useful to see ‘who beat who’, the large growth in the smartphone segment can be best appreciated if you compare current and past numbers. For example…
  • iPhone sold more units (8.3 million) Q1 this year than RIM did (7.2 million) in the same period last year
  • Android sold more units (5.2 million) Q1 this year than the iPhone did (3.8 million) in the same period last year
  • Android sold more units (5.2 million) Q1 this year than RIM did (4.3 million) two years ago in Q1 2008
  • Going back three years, RIM is now selling of the same order of phones as Nokia smartphones in Q1 2007
This demonstrates how and why mobile development needs are changing and becoming increasingly cross-platform. However, as growth continues, it also becomes increasingly financially viable to just to develop your product/services on one platform.
