I have lost count of the number of client presentations, business plans and mobile conference presentations that predict the number of smartphones will eventually exceed PCs. My mind usually glazes over and I think ‘here we go again’.
However, I came across an interesting article at the weekend on how real numbers show this is about to happen…
The key thing is that… "Windows 7 (the biggie) includes Microsoft (MSFT) OS updates as well as new unit shipments, which the others don’t."
This means that the number of smartphones shipped per day might already exceed PCs.
However, don’t forget that using the number of shipments per day ignores the huge installed base. In fact, there’s a magnitude more PCs, most of which are on old versions of XP and will probably never be upgraded.
