One of the more interesting areas for me is rugged Android. It provides new opportunities for enterprise apps that sit outside the (monetisation and discovery) problems caused by distributing only via the Android Market (Sorry, ‘Google Play Store’ – which, incidentally, is going to be a strange name for somewhere to distribute more serious apps).
Rugged smartphones were previously mainly the domain of Windows Mobile. However, with Windows Phone being much less suitable, companies are starting to consider Android.
Today, I have updated my list of rugged devices which are becoming ever more capable. I particularly like the new skeye.allegro and skeye.dart. There’s also a new trend for branded versions of existing rugged devices such as the JCB Toughphone Pro Smart which is a re-branded Motorola Defy.
