There was an article yesterday at readwriteweb on Play is to Fight the Commoditization of Android that sparked me thinking about Google Play and the reasons behind the renaming of the Android Market.
The idea is that Google has moved it’s content initiatives sideways under a new brand so that it can sell things (videos and music at the moment) to non-Android users. At the same time Google has given the new brand a higher profile by including it on the web toolbar.
From a developer viewpoint, the new name isn’t ideal. As I previously mentioned, I believe the new name cheapens and trivialises non-game apps. Meanwhile, my wife (and I suspect may others) was confused as to why the Android Market had suddenly disappeared. I expect it will also cause confusion for people who see the old Android Market badges on web sites.
