IDC have some new numbers that show that over 1 billion smartphones were shipped in 2013, up 38.4% from the 725.3 million units in 2012. This makes me reminisce back to 5 to 10 years ago when only 10s of millions smartphones shipped from mainly Nokia, HTC, Sony Ericsson and HTC. Ironically, none of these are the top smartphone vendors today.
Looking forward rather than back, IDC say that cheap devices are driving volume. What with cheaper iPhones not being that successful, it’s likely Apple won’t be pursuing this market. Instead, I anticipate it’s companies such as Huawei, who are already the no 3 vendor, who will now see the largest gains in market share.
As with 5 to 10 years ago, I suspect the top vendors might end up looking very different to now. While everyone gets excited by the high end Samsung devices, it’s the low end that Samsung has to concentrate on in order to remain the top vendor.
