Canalys Comments

canalys.gifSome thoughts on the latest Canalys research

The Nokia N70 has been very popular. It has been mainly sold off the back of 3G marketing. If people I know who have them are anything to go by, most users have been sold it as an upgrade often not knowing it’s a 3G phone let alone a Smartphone or runs Symbian. There’s nothing wrong with this (for Symbian or Nokia). However, just don’t expect many of these users to be downloading additional applications or using advanced services just yet. Something else has to occur to make this happen.

I think the Canalys sales figures are largely irrelevant now. The smartphone landscape will change considerably this year with the introduction of the Nokia N and E Series 3rd Edition phones and SE UIQ 3.0 phones. In fact, all these numbers are small compared to worldwide phone sales which are expected to exceed 1 Billion this year.

It’s ironic that Microsoft finally won the PDA war against Palm only to find the market decline 25%. Perhaps they were watching the wrong ball? However, the game has probably only just started.
