Nokia S60 Just a More Expensive S40?

windowsMobile_masthead_ltr.gifYesterday, I came across an unexpected advert on the London Underground. It was advertising the Windows Mobile smartphone. It was unexpected because Microsoft have had a long history of very little direct consumer marketing of Windows Mobile - they have tended to expect the handset OEMs or network operators to do this. Likewise, you won’t currently find Symbian marketing it’s OS to end users.

Coincidentally, there were comments yesterday on one of the official Series 60 blogs (Tommi’s S60 Applications  Blog) suggesting that Nokia should provide more marketing effort for the Series 60. Maybe they don’t see it as their role? Maybe they want retailers and network operators to do the majority of the marketing.

To many typical purchasers, I think that the Series 60 (or Windows Mobile Smartphone for that matter) is just seen as a more expensive phone. Most people (at least in the UK) receive them as part of a ‘free’ upgrade and do not appreciate or ever use the extra features. Microsoft seem to be the first to realise that determined marketing effort is required to change this perception.
