Qtopia Greenphone

Want to get into mobile Linux development? Trolltech have just released their Greenphone, a fully customisable development phone.

The phone isn’t something ordinary consumers would buy. Instead, Trolltech are pitching the phone at large corporates who might be interested in collaborating with phone manufacturers to create custom implementations for workers or special consumer segments.

However, I can see this platform as being very useful for vertical applications where connectivity is secondary rather than the primary purpose for having the device. Examples include ticketing, stock control and man-in-a-van type applications where the phone UI is hidden and the device becomes single use. This is currently a healthy area for Windows Mobile and currently untapped by Symbian.
