Mobile Zoo
I came across Mobile Zoo for the first time last week. It’s a Java ME application that people can load onto their phone which determines the phone type and capabilities. These are then uploaded to a database where they can be viewed and compared against other phones.
Mobile Zoo have also persuaded some Java ME authors to include the Mobile Zoo functionality in their application. In return they get lots of stats on who is using their applications and on what phones.
It all seems a bit mundane until you realise that there’s no central place that documents phone capabilities, especially those related to Java ME. The site even gives a breakdown of popularity across phone manufacturers, carriers, network type and system OS.

Symbian seems to have a large market share until you consider that the majority of Java ME phones run a proprietary OS…

Phone manufacturers now have to be careful what J2ME software gets run on prototype devices. For example, early this month Mobile Zoo captured information on the unannounced Nokia E90.
