WidSets SDK
When WidSets was released about a year ago I must admit I wasn’t that impressed. Why? Well, most of the widgets were just RSS feeds and all WidSets gave you was a way to read them from within a Java ME application - something you could already do in easier ways. There were a few smarter widgets but these were produced by the WidSet team. Also, Widgets seemed to create more problems than it solved.
The developer SDK promised more - a scripting environment to allow arbitrary content to be manipulated and displayed - but we had to wait for this.
For some reason, hidden behind the recent news of WidSet’s millionth user, the SDK was released on developer.widsets.com. This has unleashed the full power of WidSets to anyone. Furthermore, a year’s experience of tuning the Widsets client has probably made it much more stable when running across a variety of phones.
I have taken a look at the SDK and it’s fairly comprehensive. In fact, I estimate it requires about the same level of skill as producing a Java ME application. So why would you bother? First of all, it should abstract away some of the difficulties/differences of developing for multiple Java ME phones. Secondly, it comes with an implicit discovery mechanism so people can find your widget.
