Comes with Applications?

The mainstream advertising of the iPhone App store on TV (in the UK and US at least) has heightened public awareness that applications can be downloaded to phones. It’s also well known that the iPhone application store is a success for both developers and Apple. The problem is how can Nokia (or anyone else) beat this?

With all the latest news on Nokia’s ‘Comes with Music’, I started wondering if the same concept could be applied to applications. For example, Nokia (or anyone for that matter) could have an applications store where all applications are free. Developers would be paid a very small royalty based on the number of unique handsets that download the application. Consumers could choose to pay extra for ‘Comes with Applications’ when they first buy the phone or subsequently after purchase.

UPDATE:  Just read that Nokia is having difficulty getting operators to sell ‘Comes with Music’ phones.
UPDATE2: UK’s 3 network will be selling ‘Comes with Music’ phones but ‘unlimited access’ doesn’t mean ‘unlimited downloads’.
