Supporting a Large Market
I have a long-term developer friend in Thailand who currently has the number 2 iPhone application in the US, ParkingLot. The application is also currently in the top 7 in the UK and top 10 in 22 countries. I have had lots of questions for him, not least, how does he support of the order of tens of thousands of people downloading his application every day? How many email enquiries does he get a day?
It turns out he only get 2 to 3 support enquiries per day! It’s interesting that people paying $.99 for an application don’t expect support! App stores really have changed the way developers should expect the market to work. As my friend in Thailand suggested, almost everything is driven by the customer now. Their thoughts and expectations drive the market.
It’s great to hear about someone, especially someone I know, who has an iPhone success story. I personally know other people who have been less successful on the App Store and are now doing iPhone contract programming. What’s the difference? Well, I believe my friend in Thailand spends a lot of time analysing the App Store market. He knows and reacts to the market better. He doesn’t create what he wants, he creates what the market wants.
