Ad-Funded Model

adcenter.gifThere’s an interesting post on anddev.org where someone has created an ad-supported Android application only to have his adverts and revenue resource pulled from under him (by Microsoft adCenter in this case). This shows one of the perils of the ad-funded model if you relying on adverts from a 3rd party provider. Their terms and conditions are usually onerous and there’s the possible that they can cut you off, or at the least malfunction, at any time.

Most ad-funded companies I have worked with are larger and have tended to try to create their own inventory of adverts. This is much more difficult to achieve because you have to balance the number of advertisers with the number of users otherwise you end up with unhappy advertisers or not enough adverts to show.

The more successful ad-funded applications tend to be those that combine both their own ad inventory together with one or more 3rd party advert providers. This ensures you aren’t totally reliant on 3rd parties but also gives you enough ads to fall back on when you don’t have enough advertisers.
