MEX 2009
PMN have their 2009 MEX Mobile User Experience Conference in London on the 19th - 20th May 2009 in London. Unfortunately, I won’t be there this year as I have too much work. It’s unfortunate I can’t go because the themes of the conference reflect current issues and some of the things I have been working with and talking about.
For example, the agenda includes a session on ‘User interface design is key to leadership in application stores’. I have mentioned some problems and limitations of the application stores on this blog and more recently on AndroidSoftwareDeveloper.com. MEX will consider the following statement and questions…
"We believe…current app stores are little more than glorified lists. They are time consuming to browse and innovative applications are often buried by poor interface design. The opportunity is for a next generation provider to transcend the traditional scrolling list and establish market leadership through innovative UI design, an open approach to commercial partnerships and advanced customer understanding."
"Is there a more innovative way to help users find the software they’re most likely to buy?"
"Is there are an upper limit on the number of applications current stores like the Android Market and Apple App Store can support before it becomes too difficult for new developers to get noticed?"
I find it amazing that application stores have, after such a short time, ended up so limited. More screen images would be more informative. Maybe there’s scope for recommendation type systems based on what you have already purchased. Reviews could have more substance. Ratings of reviews could sort the useful from the childish comments and spam. A related web site, accessible via the desktop, could provide much more information than is available via mobile. Even simple mechanisms such as an email list of new applications would help new application discovery.
MEX is limited to 100 participants, always sells out and is currently offering the remaining places.
