Freemium Content

fiercemobilecontent.gifThere’s a thought provoking article at FierceMobileContent on what they are calling Freemium content. That is, applications that are free but gain revenue another way, either via subscriptions, ad-funding or some other source.

With the downward pressure on applications to become cheaper and cheaper, at some stage it becomes more attractive to try and gain revenue another way. As the article suggests, this may be a problem for application store providers and operators because they may end up outside the purchasing loop. Application store providers and operators need to start thinking about providing new innovative mechanisms for revenue generation.

Free applications certainly attract a lot of downloads. I have had literally millions of downloads of my various types of freeware over the years. In fact, I see there’s a great opportunity for brands to get involved to create useful free single-branded applications that don’t necessarily create income but instead provide a means for innovative and trackable PR.
