Dealer Commission for Ovi Applications
Mobile developers will be interested to hear that Nokia is trialling the idea of offering dealers (retail stores) commission for every Ovi Store application or service sold. For the trial, the commission will be £2 per application/service.
In some ways this makes sense. It provides a way for Nokia to use store staff as evangelists for Ovi. Also, it maps well onto Nokia’s strategy of differentiating through software and services as opposed to hardware, as according to Mobile Today, "the desire from operators to subsidise phones dwindles".
However, I am not sure how this adds up financially, especially as Nokia is reportedly trying to introduce a 50/50 revenue split with network operators. Where will the £2 commission come from, especially for low priced applications?
