T-Mobile Pulse

tmobile.gifEarlier this month I mentioned I had ordered the T-Mobile Pulse (a Huawei device). 25 days later and I received it yesterday. Here are my first impressions…

Positive

  • The wider screen (than G1) makes the on screen keyboard much more usable.
  • Its size/shape is so similar to the iPhone that I can’t help but think this was the design brief.
  • Its a quality device given its cost but obviously has no metallic case parts.
  • Battery life is similar to the G1.
  • It even comes with a slip case.
Negative
  • The power lead is far too short.
  • There’s no notification led like on the G1. I miss knowing I have a new email or SMS.
  • Some fashion victims might dislike the T-Mobile as opposed to handset OEM branding.
  • It didn’t sync Google contacts and calendar by default. Presumably because you might use other sync solutions/sources.
  • It ships with OS version v1.5. Coincidentally, my G1 upgraded itself to 1.6 the day I received the Pulse. Maybe it knows and doesn’t want to be replaced?
  • The microphone is at the bottom corner rather than the centre bottom. It’s easy to have your hand over it when making a call!
I still see the T-Mobile Pulse as a landmark phone. It’s the first contract-less and inexpensive Android phone. It sets new expectations as to how much people might pay for an Android device. The total cost of ownership over the length of a typical contract is massively less than any other Smartphone. It will make more branded alternatives from Motorola or Sony Ericsson a difficult choice.
