Paying to Promote your App
There’s a great article at MobileBeat on mobile advertising.
Of particular interest was the part that mentioned how much it costs to promote your iPhone app …
"The price of running the campaigns accelerated as demand heated up. In October 2008, a free application needed to spend $10,000 to get on a ‘Top 25′ list. By December 2008, it took $11,000, and by March 2009, it took $20,000. Analytics company Pinch Media, which recently merged with Flurry, documented this in a study. To get to the coveted No 1 spot in the App Store, a company needed to spend $150,000, according to Pinch. And when I asked my sources for recent prices, I found they’d gone up again: With the last month, one application developer, who requested anonymity, said it cost $250,000 to get to the No. 1 spot."
With accelerating advertising income such as this, it’s easy to see why Google, Apple and now Openwave are aggressively buying up advertising startups. It also demonstrates how difficult it is becoming to make your application stand out from the crowd.
